Austria’s Federal Ministry of Life is promoting the use of electric vehicles to mitigate pressure on public transport. The ministry plans to convert 4.5% of all the approximately 200,000 vehicles in the country to electric power by 2020. However, potential owners of these vehicles are concerned about being stranded on the roadside by a battery shortage, representing a major issue hampering the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. The government’s most recent action has been to formulate a plan to build more than 400 new charging stations for electric vehicles by the end of 2015 within the designated advanced initiative model region of the greater Vienna area.
